19th C. Torah Scroll Case, Jerusalem

This is one of the only remaining pieces from the Yochanan ben Zackai synagogue, one of a complex of four Sephardic synagogues destroyed when the Jordanians captured the Old City of Jerusalem during Israel's War of Independence in 1948-49. The top of the keter (crown) was glued back on, silver leaf was applied, and the hinges were reinstalled to improve stability.
