I hold workshops on traditional furniture restoration techniques. We
meet weekly for 3-hour sessions during which participants gain
hands-on experience restoring their own pieces. A typical workshop
experience is described by Carol Goldin in an interview with
Essence magazine,
“Beauty
Restored” (Ha'aretz English Edition, April 7, 2006).
Space in the workshops is limited. Interested parties are invited to
contact me for further information.
Prior to joining
the workshop participants select the project on which they want to
work, keeping in mind that it should not be too large or too
complex. Depending on the objects, topics covered are likely to
include:
Repair and refinishing
-
Repair the structure of broken pieces
-
Replace missing veneer, including marquetry (inlay), where
appropriate
-
Staining / color matching
-
Finish pieces with traditional French polish / waxing
Hands-on experience with tools of the trade
-
Power hand tools: sander, router, jigsaw, drill,
battery-powered screw driver
-
Traditional hand tools: hand planes, chisels, files, back saw,
mallets
Use of various materials
-
Stripping materials
-
Stains, shellac, beeswax, oils
-
Traditional restoration glues
